Info on the Weather In Daytona Beach, FL

Daytona Beach is truly a four-season destination, thanks to its year-round pleasant climate. For more than a century, travelers have been recognizing the advantages of heading to this region of the country to enjoy the warm winters while others have long been attracted to Daytona’s sunny summers by the water.

Like most of the southeastern United States, Daytona (and in fact all of Florida) enjoys a subtropical humid climate, which is characterized by hot, humid summers and cool but comfortable winters. Rain is significant during most seasons and will include rain and occasional but rare snow in the winter and thunderstorms in the summertime. Frost is not unusual in the winter as well and can greatly affect the area’s citrus crop when freezes are ongoing but most of the more severe winter weather is confined to the inland areas and not the beaches.

Tropical storms and hurricanes can affect the area greatly during the months of June through October. Hurricanes can be quite damaging when direct hits occur. Most recently, Hurricane Floyd caused significant damage to the beach and pier in 1999 and a series of three hurricanes – Charley, Frances, and Jeanne – wreaked havoc in the area in 2004, causing power outages and plenty of collateral damage. Surfers, however, find it a good time to test the waves, though great caution should be exercised when surfing as a hurricane approaches.

Nevertheless, the weather in Daytona Beach can be described as “ideal” during much of the year. While the winters can get a little bit chilly, it’s comfortable enough in early March for locals and tourists to start heading back to the beaches and beach season easily lasts into early December.

Summers certainly are hot, but the abundance of water and water activities and plenty of air conditioning keep visitors cool when the heat gets to be a bit much. Average summer temperatures, according to the National Weather Service, are about 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit, but it’s not unusual for the mercury to climb well into the 90s. Combine that with humidity that nears 100% and it’s easy to see why some people prefer to vacation in Daytona Beach during other times of the year.

Autumn and spring in Daytona Beach are simply lovely. Highs range in the mid-70s to 80 and the nights are generally cool and pleasant, requiring a light jacket or sweater for evening activities. This is the time of year when golfers arrive, content to play the many courses in the area during this perfect weather. As mentioned previously, it’s also warm enough for the beach and for participation in water sports like fishing, boating, swimming, snorkeling, and more.
