Parasailing in Daytona Beach, FL
There are all sorts of ways to experience the fun and sights of Daytona Beach, but one of the most unique ways to see the city and its coastline is from the air. Parasailing, popular at many beach locations, has literally reached new heights in Daytona, with companies offering excursions that can take you as high as 2,000 feet in the air! It’s an experience that is safe and suitable for all ages and one that you won't soon forget.
Parasailing made its debut in the 1980s, first using a stationary platform for take-offs. Today, just about all parasailing outfitters use “winchboats” from which to launch their passengers. The simplicity and safety of the system makes take-off effortless and winchboat systems can accommodate heavier weights and more than one passenger.
The premiere parasailing outfitter in Daytona Beach, aptly named Daytona Parasailing Inc., notes that anyone can go parasailing, from toddlers to seniors, providing they don’t have a paralyzing fear of heights. Flights can take passengers anyway from about 800 to around 2,000 feet in the air. The higher you go, the higher the price, but Daytona Parasail is one of just a few companies in Florida that offer the 2,000 foot option.
Guests can choose to ride on a single-seated kite or they can choose a tandem side-by-side option instead. This is ideal for children who may be hesitant about flying, those who are uncomfortable with heights, or first time fliers of any age. The entire excursion generally takes about 45 minutes from start to finish and includes between 8 and 15 minutes of air time. The rest of the time includes the boat ride out from shore and back in. Some companies will pick up passengers at their hotel and return them to the same location at the end of their parasailing excursion.
There is no need to get soaking wet on your parasailing trip unless you really want to do so. While you may get your feet wet getting on and off the boat, you can choose to stay dry for the rest of the trip. However, if you’d like to get “dipped” during your ride, operators will gladly bring you down for a refreshing dunk. If that’s your plan, it’s best to wear a bathing suit. Otherwise, shorts and t-shirts are okay for the trip. Shoes are optional while flying.
Avid photographers, both amateur and professional, are thrilled with the photos they can garner from a parasailing journey. Passengers are welcome to bring their cameras (at their own risk) and many individuals choose to bring video cameras as well to document their flight. Many outfitters offer waterproof disposal cameras for sale for those who don’t want to risk carrying a more expensive piece of equipment along for the ride.
Summertime is the most popular time for parasailing in Daytona Beach but just about any time of the year is suitable providing the skies are clear and it’s not too cold. It’s a good idea to make advance reservations, especially during peak tourist seasons, including Spring Break.
