Kayaking in Daytona Beach, FL
For some vacationers, the only way to spend time on the water is aboard a large boat with a cold drink in one hand and a fishing rod in the other. Some people, however, prefer to get up close and personal with the water, choosing a smaller vessel for their journey. For those people, kayaking is the ideal way to travel the waters of the Daytona Beach area and there are plenty of outfitters available to lead the way.
Kayaking is a sport that continues to increase in popularity, especially in regions of the country where there’s plenty to explore. From a kayak, paddlers can get close to nature and make their way through backwaters not navigable by larger vessels. In addition, it’s a tranquil and wholesome sport that the whole family can enjoy together, from young children to able-bodied senior citizens.
The rivers of the Daytona area are ideal for kayaking for much of the year. Many outfitters suggest an excursion on the St. Johns River. A trip on this pristine river puts paddlers close to some of the most undisturbed natural wildlife areas in the state. Often, in the winter months, kayakers will even catch a look at some endangered Florida manatees. Other wildlife along this river might include river otters, bobcats, egrets, osprey, bald eagles, and many other species. The St. Johns River can accommodate kayakers of all skill levels because much of the water is smooth and gently flowing.
The Tomoka River is another popular kayaking river. Also tranquil and suitable for beginners, the Tomoka offers numerous side creeks and many different paddling options, depending on the tides. This river passes through the Tomoka Marsh Aquatic Preserve and the Tomoka State Park, allowing for some fantastic wildlife viewing, and the river is a designated manatee sanctuary. Other rare wildlife found along the Tomoka might include the wood stork and the Atlantic salt marsh snake. Ocean kayaking is available as well but is not as popular as river kayaking in the Daytona area.
Most outfitters offer tours that last an average of roughly 4 hours and many welcome kayakers age 4 and older, offering tandem kayaks for parents with young children. Generally, all equipment is included in one price, including kayaks, life jackets, bottled water, and snacks or lunch, depending on the time and duration of the tour. Dry kayaks are available for the colder winter months. Kayakers are encouraged to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a towel, and binoculars as well as extra clothing. Some outfitters will pick up and drop off customers at their hotels and then provide transportation to the site where the kayaks will be put in.
Groups are eagerly accommodated in most cases and a tour can be arranged that includes only those in your group. These group tours may also include some education courtesy of on-staff naturalists, or the group excursion may be used as a team-building experience for companies hoping to build better rapport among employees. Barbecues and other special meals may be included in group events if desired.
Most of the outfitters also offer group or individual
lessons for those who’ve never before experienced the sport of kayaking.
Lessons will help kayakers, especially young children, feel more comfortable
on the water.
