Golfing in Daytona Beach, FL
One of the nicest things about Daytona Beach is that
the weather allows for four season fun. If you’re a golfer, you’ll most
likely find that at least three of those four seasons are going to be
suitable for a round or two of your favorite game. Indeed, golfers head to
the Daytona area nearly year round, avoiding – perhaps – the hottest days of
mid-June through mid-September. The rest of the year, however, is ideal for
golfing and many avid golfers travel to Florida during those times with a
golf package in hand, looking forward to at least a round a day.
There are numerous golf courses in and around Daytona
Beach, both public and private, offering a variety of challenges for golfers
of different skill levels. Some are definitely more challenging than others
but it isn’t difficult to find at least a few suitable to your experience.
There are a few different kinds of golfers that visit
Daytona Beach – the ones that head there for a vacation and then decide to
play a round while in town, and those that head to Daytona specifically for
the golf opportunities. For the latter group of individuals, purchasing a
golf package is often the best idea. Many area hotels and resorts offer golf
packages and some even have a “golf concierge” on staff who can assist in
putting the right package together for you. These will include overnight
accommodations and as many rounds of golf as you’d like to include during
your stay, and may even include dinner or entertainment reservations as
well. These packages are arranged before your arrival so that everything is
in place by the time you check in. Golf courses in Daytona Beach include:
- Daytona Beach Golf Club – This municipal facility
has two courses – North and South. The South course is par 71 with wide
fairways and, according to experts, not too difficult approach shots.
The 18-hole, par 72 North Course is very similar in skill level but was
built 35 years after the original South course.
- Indigo Lakes Golf Club -
Designed by Lloyd Clifton and opened in 1976, this public course
provides three sets of tees for those of differing experience levels.
Par is 72. There’s also a nice restaurant on site as well as a
full-service bar and lounge.
- LPGA International Courses – There are two public
golf courses located at this facility in Daytona Beach. The Champions
Course, par 72, was designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1994. It is
playable for all skill levels but certainly presents some challenges.
The Legends Course, also par 72, was built in 1997 and designed by
Arthur Hills. It features natural wetlands and plenty of water hazards
and blends in seamlessly with the beautiful Florida landscape. At the
LPGA facility, guests can also attend the Practice Academy for lessons,
purchase golf apparel and gifts, and eat a meal at the on-site
restaurant.
- The Club at Pelican Bay – Pelican Bay also boasts
two courses. The North Course was designed by Bill Amick and features
long, challenging holes. A private course until 2008, it is now open to
the public. It has been the site of two Senior PGA tournaments. The
South Course, designed by Lloyd Clifton, takes full advantage of the
waterways that run through it, demanding accuracy of shots. The Club at
Pelican Bay also offers a practice area, putting green, beverage cart
service, pro shop, lessons with PGA professionals, a pool and cabana, a
restaurant, and banquet facilities.
